We eannot, however, refrain from giving an extract relative to the perils which befell our mncli esteemed friend, Captain Heaphy, in his gallant and chivalrous endeavours to aid a wounded soldier of the 40th. " Captain Ilenphy, of the Auckland A oluutoi-vs, particularly distinguished liiinsdf by his cool activity at tlic head of tlu; men wherever the tire was hottest, hv his assistance to the wounded, anil hy his miraculous escapes, his clothes bctiiK literally dost roved by the bullets that grazed his flesh more than onco without seriously injuring- him. One bullet passed through the breast of his coat, tearing the skin of his ribs just under the heart ; one tore his sleeve, grazing the ann; another his trousers, another liis cap, just missing: the skull, and another Cut the belt of his revolver through. This morning, however, our gallant citizen suldier was to be scon as cool as ever, and harrilig- the addition of a piece ot sticking j>l;<istor, enahored. It is fortunate lor him tlwt ho is as thin as he is, for an additional inch to his circumference yesterday would have materially altered his prospects of a long life."
