Till-: steamer " Curio,' Captain Turner, arrived from Tauranga yesterday afternoon having sailed from thence tin 1 previous day. All was ijoiim 011 in (lie most quiet manner. T1 if troops were not only metaphorically. Imt literally, revelling in clover. Colonel Carey was establishing his posit ion at To l'apa where a strong redoubt was in rapid course of completion. TAK.m-XA Lakk. —(ireat preparations are being made to carry out the festivities of to-day and to-morrow successfully. The horse racing will ta 1;e place to-day 011 the sea beach close by the lake. There are. we perceive, four races, and if is likelv that some good horses w ill be entered from up ihe country. variety of amusements will lie kept, up throughout the day —and for those pic-nic parties who may choose to remain, a grand ball will come olf this evening, in the large marquee bv the lake. The report of the "Jiidgeway Committee was brought up bv Mr. Cheeseman. It was referred to the Library Committee, with the view ot having the most important parts of the documentary evidence selected for printing. A long discussion then arose 011 the Empowering Hill. The consideration of this question was eventually adjourned. The Appropriation ISill was read a third time and passed. The ihistle iiill was thrown out. ;I')i-st. —During the las! few days the heat and dust have been almost insupportable in the city. The former we must take as it comes, the latter is an evil remediable by ourselves, or by those appointed by us to undertake such duties, and should be at once removed. Some little time since the City JJoard advertised for watercarts and every body then thought that the regularly experienced summer pest " dust" would be at an end. Nothing, however, has come of the movement the Board then made—why we cannot say; for we are at a loss to know why a watercart or two could noL be extemporised lor the remainder of the summer. A large cask on an ordinary cart or frame might easily be procured and the hose and perforated pipe running round the back might we think have been undertaken even without the aid of a dulv qualified engineer. As it. is a vast amount, of inconvenience has been experienced by the general public, and a large quantity of goods- | have been destroyed in the various shops, for the want of attention to this really serious nuisance, .Il'iiv List. —A special meeting of the .Justice.' of the Peace for the City and district-of Auckland will be held on Monday next, at the iiesident Magistrate's Court, for the purpose of forming a jury list for the ensuing year. The gram jury list formed long since, for this province, i: extremely small, and the names, are chosen 01 no particular system that we know of. The (iSth, or rathor that portion of the regt. last, arrived by the transport ship ■ Armenian,' marched from'the Albert Barracks for Otiilmliu. en roiifc for (lie Queen's liedouht ami front under Major Kirby on Wednesday at 2 p.m. They are a very line body of men, and will uudouhtdly form a very oppotune reinforcement to General Cameron's force. Election ok City Engineers.—Yesterday afternoon there was a full meeting of the City Board for the purpose of electing an Engineer from the thirteen applications received on Tuesday last. Of these candidate.;; five of the most eligible applications were selected and thi'i' , testimonials carefully gone through and considered. Ijkskhtkhs—When the whaler llainbow. C:i])t. Nichols, was last in Auckland lie shipped several men. .and lately hearing that wiir lind broken out and finding that six of these men were deserters, one from tin* ' Harrier, , and the oilier live from regls. in the Colony, he determined upon making tliem join their comrades in the field. Accordingly, touching at Auckland the day before yesterday he gave notice to the police as to the character of .some of his crew and llie six oll'enders were at once brought ashore, and having been taken before the liesident Magistrate, were transferred to the naval and military authorities. Tin; \lohn Dr.vcAN.'—Tenders for the discharging of this ship uil) be received by Messrs. Crnickshank ;ind Smart, until ID o'clock tomorrow morning. Tin: Attack o.v tiii: Esroirr at tiii: ]{axok Back.—As will be seen by (lie letter of our own correspondent at Drury, the information respecting this attack which we placed before (lie public in an extra yesterday forenoon, was perfectly correct, notwithstanding the doubt sought to be cast upon ii by certain parties. The natives, it appears, fired upon the first cart in the convoy. This fact is important as showing that the enemy are able to work their way back through bush within our lines of defence. Our correspondent's letter contains also souk. , startling disclosures respecting the finding of gold, and quart/, containing gold at the Wairoa. Tuakau. and .Drury. Jr is with sincere regret that we have to record the premature decease of another of our old and trusty friends formerly of the oMlh regiment. Mr. "Frederick Sims—latterly of the Commercial Hotel, Shorlkind-strect —but at. the time of Auckland's need, a smart soldier in the gallant - Kutlaudcrs' with whose head quarters he arrived in this Colony and -.villi whom he served almost until the date of the return of that favorite corps to England. Asa respectable and respected citizen—a long established cricketer— and an ollicer of the Auckland Volunteer liilles. —from which he was through ill health obliged to retire —Mr. Sims was almost universally! known. It is but a few days since ive iiceompained him in the bus, to Onehunga whither he went to tin- funeral of an old comrade. Mr. Costello. nlso of the SStli, and now we hs-.vc to record his own early doom. Such is life !
