Thk expedition for Tauranga, in command o! Col. Carey embarked yesterdav morning from the Queen Street Wharf on board 11.M.5.5. 'Miranda.' J5 guns, (.'apt. Jenkins, and the chartered steamer 'Corio,' Capt. Turner. Precisely at 10 a.m., the detachment of the (iStli regt.. stationed in Auckland marched from the Allied "Barracks by Short land and Queen-streets to the wharf, the "splendid regimental hand preceding them, and playing " Patrick's Day, and other spirit-stirring airs. There were a great many spectators to witness 1 lie embarkation and to wish the brave fellows God speed._ not that (he expedition is looked at as one of a more than adventurous character, but because it is the first step in check of the truculent natives ot the east coast, and as the means of opening up :i line and long dormant country to Kuropean occupation ami civilization, a measure quite as benelicial to the natives themselves as to (hose whom t heir intemperate and unprovoked violence has compelled to take possession. tin reaching the pier-head the (ISth were halted and drawn up. the band being sent back to barracks. " Miranda ' had steamed alongside the clipper ship ' Bombay.' and made last, and shortly afterwards the soldiery moved on board bv sections, some of the 3rd W aikato s wlija. with the -l'.lrd Regiment. had come in from Onehunga. following, to the uuniistakeable displeasure of Captain Jenkins, who ordered them out of his ship, instructing them, in peremptory tones, to "make tracks" for the 'Corio. notwithstanding the deprecatory explanations which seemed to be given by the lirigade Major. Manv of the wives and children of the soldiers Hocked on board the ' Pombav ' to utter their parting adieus. Poor things, they were in sad distress: and no wonder, being left poorly provided. in a strange place, and with hearts brimful of grief and anxiety for those dear to them. AYitli respect to provision, we heartily hope that public sympathy has been stirred, and will be still further and />r<icliru/ly stirred in ministering to the necessities and comforts ol the wives and oflspring of the men who have arrived among us to light our battles. Auckland was no niggard of her means when "a voice from the Crimea" sounded in her ears: and we arc well aware that the measure needs but to be set on foot to raise a " Patriotic Fund " for Now Zealand service to meet with the wannest, the most cordial, encouragement and support. Ol the service to be undertaken at Tauranga, we have a very great opinion. The country is a delightful one. the native population not over redundant, and not very likely to try conclusions with our army of occupation. We think, therefore. the poor women may dry their tears, and look forward with hopeful confidence.
