Sin,—Leading articles, :iml letters from correspondents, have appeared in the columns of each of the local papers, advocating the cause of Ihe wives and families of our soldiers, the former residing in town sulfering privation, want, and misery; the latter undergoing discomfort and hardship, fighting our battles at the front, practically as far away frotr those dear ones as though they were in another hemisphere. I have yet to learn that any practical result has followed your appeal, and therefore take the liberty of reminding my fellow citizens that years ago, when the population of Auckland was not onefourth what it is at present, gentlemen were found able and willing to come forward as theatrical amateurs, drawing crowded houses, and adding considerablv to the funds of whatever the charitable or benevolent object in view may have been. I feel, sir, that a hint will be sufllcient. With such an infusion of new blood ns we have received within the last five or six years (to say nothing of the old stock), I am satisfied that a few evenings' healthy intellectual amusement may be aflbrded to our citizens, and a handsome amount handed over for the relief of the wives and families of our brave defenders. Let a meeting be called of those willing to aid the good cause, a committee appointed to work out the details, ami I venture to predict that both pleasure and profit will result.
