CITY BOARD-TUESDAY.
Present, Messrs. Ashton, Darby, Finlav, Maere,ady, ! Macf.trlanc, Uidings, Swan-on, Webater, and tfie (.'nairman. t A letter was read from Mr. Cox, applying for I relief from the payment of rates for his late ollices in | iJueen-strt et, since the time of the lire, his lease I having expired with the burning of tin' premises. : Mr. Swanson supported the application on the grounds of equity. The majority of the board came | to the decision that they would not bo justified in complying with Mr. Cox's request. Some disapprobation was expressed at no answer having bequ received from the .Superintendent relative to the application made in respect to the sea wall in ilrake-sirret. It was resolved to institute proceedings against Messrs. Cheesemaii and Gibbons, for having refu-"d to pay rent as carriers between Auckland and Onehuuga. The Chairman stated that the City lioard Amendment Hill h id been passed, and that it did not contain all the suggestions made by the lioard, particularly Ihe ,-i'iieilule of notice to ratepayers : tho clause also subjecting hawkers to licenses had been rejected. The Chairman thought it desirable to form a finance committee, which might bring up a report at tho next meeting. This subject was ultimately postponed, as was also tho matter of watering the streets. The advisability of summoning Mr. Ox ley for a breach of the lluilding Act was agreed to. It was generally agreed that it was not advisable to enter into l'resh contracts for lighting the city. Strong disapprobation was - expressed by several momben of tho Hoard at the remarks made by Mr. Cadman in the Provincial Council. It was proposed by Mr. Macready and .-econdod by Mr. Darby, that a sum of £20 he awarded to Mr. Jackson over the contract price in consideration of the amount of rock met with in excavating the cross drains in Queon-street. This motion, was agreed to. Tho report of the rate collector, Mr. Diddams, was read by the Secretary. Notice of motion was given by Mr. Jj'inlay for iioxt sitting day, that the wages of Mr. Hyde, foreman of works, ho raised from IDs. to 12s. p.-r day. Mr. Swanson and Mr. Finlay were appointed to confer with .Mr. Sheehan in reference to the unjust charge which had been made upon him for a rate on property which he never possessed, ami having so conferred with him, to report thereon to the Board at its next sitting. The following resolution was agreed to : —"That a Committee bo appointed to arrange for a public meeting of the inhabitants of Auckland, to consider the propriety of memorializing the Governors of tho neighbouring (Monies on the subject of removing tho seat of Government, from Auckland. That Committee to consist of tho Chairman, Mr. Swanson, ill-. Hidings, Mr. Maoi'arlane, Mr. 1). Graham."
