CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
The adjourned monthly meeting was held yesterday, in the Chamber of Coimueroe, Fort-etroet. " Present : —Messrs. J. A. OilHllan, I). Xatliau, C. Daviß, J. Harrop, S. Cochrane. The Chairman laid on the table the following letter from the Marine Board, also communications from the Secretary of tho New Zealand Indujtrial Exhibition, which the Secretary was directed to acknowledge. " Marine Boar I 0:11 co, ''Auckland, 19th November, IS'jJ. " Sir, —Captain Daklv hae handed to me a letter containing resolutions of the Chamber of Commerce, bringing to the notice of the Marine: Board the short delivery of ballast to vessels, and the dangerous consequences likely to ensue from such malpractice. " The Marine Board Act of 1863, now under consideration by the Assembly, vests in the Superintendent the power of licensing and regulating' fares of boats; he will therefore have authority to remedy
the evil of which tho C'lmmber so justly complain. " I have, .See.., " Charles SnAur, " Masters Warden, Marine Board. " To J. A. Giltillan, Esq., " Chairman Chamber of Commerce, " Auckland."
Mr. Davis in pursuance of his notice of motion, said i:.e had consulted the constituency to ascertain t ho requirements of that department for accommodation on tlie whnrf, but found it impossible at tliQ prosent meeting to enter into details ; but as the matter wus one affecting the commercial community moat seriously, he moved that a deputation be appointed to wait on the Collector of Customs, and learn the actual want -of' the department,—deputation to consist of Messrs. J. A. Gilfilliin, Nathan, and the mover, and report at next meeting.
This motion was seconded by Mr. S. Cochrane and carried.
Messrs. ITan op and Cochrane made some remarks on the subject, considering it. not deflirable for Government to expend a large sum on the present wharf.
Mr. Ilarrop called attention to the General Government's vote of £5,000 mnde in 1861 for a new Custom House, which was carried by the meeting : a matter competent to be entertained by the above name! committee av l l reported on.
Mr. Gilfill.m made a few remarks on the report of the late Steam Postal Committee of the House of Representatives. He considered Auckland had no reason to complaiu at present of postal facilities, but warned the meeting of probable impending change detrimental to her interests.
