CITY LEVELS, Tho CrtATmtAX then read a letter from ITis Honor tho Superintendent respecting the Citv Levels. * After it wa3 moved by Mr. Asuton, "Ihat in regard to the request made by his Honor, to appoint competent persons fo carry out Ihc City Levels, this Board declines to interfere in the matter." Seconded by Mr. Swanso.v, and carried unanimously. tiie ' nntALATA.' Mr. Asirrox moved that the Chairman do address a congratulatory letter to Captain Lacy of the s/s. ' Himalaya,' welcoming him on his safe arrival in the port of Auckland, and requesting that tlus public of Auckland may be allowed to visit the vessel. I have the honor to inform you that the water pipes in the enstody of the Provincial Government may he said to belong to the City of •Auckland, and that there is no objection, that I am aware of, to the Hoard of CnmrnKsioners using a portion of them for tho wells now in course of construction.—l have. ,vc. f Roiura? Sin,—l hare the honor to acknowledge receipt of your letter of loth November, instant, enclosing a list of persons to whom Licenses for keeping Lodging Houses have been issued by the City Board of Commissioners, und requesting that IwiuYrnn time to time inform tho Hoard of the mauner in which thc'.-e houses arc conducted. In reply I beg to acquaint yon that it will afford mo much pleasure to accede to that request, and for that purpose, I would be glad to be put in possession of any rules or regulations made by the Board for the government of houses of the description named. The CiiAimrvx informed tlie lhiard that summonses had been issued against those who hud refused to pay .their rates, as their time had already expired. Mr. Ashton moved that the parties named in the report be sued for their rates. PAYMENT. Mr. Graham moved that-the curb belaid down 1 in Quec.n-street, in front of tlie Greyhound Hotel, providing Mr. Rogers pays half tlie expense. Seconded by Mr. Ashton and carried. PUMPS VOll WELLS. The Chairman was authorised to communicate with Mes?rs. Yiekcry and Masefield, and Mr. Fiiaseu, as to the cost of pumps for wells. The report was tli >n read as follows :— Gkntlkmkn.—l beg respectfully to call your attention to tlic following matters, vi/.: That a gutter inlet is required at the head of the sewer Messrs. Pent and .spare are making at the fo- t of Slinrthuulstrcet. The cost will be about 10s. exclusive of the c.<st of the grate. It will be necessary to raise the lower one there also. 'This will east about-1 P>. Gutter Inlets arc also required opposite the Tralagcrlnn, and at the bottom of West Queen street, in The cost of these inlets will he each, exclusive of the cost of the grate. While tho fence is up, n* we shall have to stop tho whole trailic of West Queen-street, it will be i.'cc<sary to take toe I present motai off Queen and part of West Qaeen-slrects. The quantity will be about Gi»y anls, and this at Ms. per yard wi 1 amount to nearly £10. A wooden shoot into the Ligar Canal, ami a grating is also required in Victoria-street. This will prevent the surface water coming down Victoria-street from Hooding Queen-street. I can manage this work vyith our >ivn labourers. I particularly wish to impress on the members of tlic Board the necessity for opening up, before tlie weather gets too dry and the ground too hard, tlic drains, cutting the gnu* away, »ve., throughout the City, and for this work request tlie Board
