LEG ISLATIVE COUNCIL. Tuesday, Nov. 17'rir. The chair was taken at two o'clock, (en members were present. The first business was the announceto the Council that the royal assent hail been given to the Native Land Act, 18(>2, the Civil List Act, 1S()2, fhe Ci-own Grants Act, ISO 2. and tHe Auckland Waste Lands Amendment* Act, 180-. Major Richmond brought, up the report, of the committee on standing orders. The lion. Mr. Whitaker then moved the following resolution:—'• Resolved, that on the occasion of the arrival of the ship ' Himalaya,' with the 50th regiment, this Council desires to express its sincere acknowledgments to Her Majesty's Principal Secretary of -State for the Colonies, the Duke of Neweastle, for the promptitude with which he has cruised sullieient aid to be allbrded to the Colony in its need. That this resolution be transmitted to His Kxcellency the Governor, wilh a request that he will be pleased to forward the same to His Grace the Duke of Newcastle." Looking al the promptitude with winch the Duke of Newcastle hud acted, Mr. Whitaker thought it his duty to move the present address (o him ; the General Assembly had had differences of opinion with the Duke oil several occasions, and when they saw him acting as he had now done, it was only fair that they should thank him for jiis promptitude. The hon. Mr. Swainson seconded file motion, which passed without discussion or opposition. The third reading of the Provincial Councils Powers Extension Uill was postponed fill next Thursday, and the Arms Act Continuance Hill was read a third time and passed The Land Clauses Consolidation Jiill was further considered in Committee, reported, and third reading made :m order for Thursday. On the third reading of the New Zealand •Settlements Uill, Mr. Whitaker moved an additional clause, and the bill having been re-eummitted with a view of making an alteration in clause 7, was then read a third time. Mr. Sewell gave notice that* on Thursday next* In: would move fer all reports, letters, minutes, and relating to an alleged conviction on the part of the native inhabitants to exterminate or expel the Kuropcati settlers of the Colony, of all memoranda of the ministers and of his Kxcellcucv thereon; ' of all correspondence between his ftxcclicnev, (he ministers, or any other otlicer of Government and the military authorities as to movements of Her .Majesty's troops in consequence of any such combination or with a view to counteract the same. Also of all letters, reports, instructive memoranda, and other papers not. already printed which have passed between his Kxcolleney, flic ministers, or any other otlicer of Government, and of all memoranda and minutes thereon relative to the institution established at the Awamutu under Mr. Gorsi. the native newspaper, the I'ilioilwi, and the forcible breaking up of the said institution, and the copies of the leading articles cf the said newspaper, with translations thereof.
