TO. OUR SUBSCRIBERS.
Some twelve months since we contemplated doubling the size of our paper. Subsequently the receipts diminished so materially that we announced the probability of our being compelled to discontinue the Gazette. The defalcation has since increased, yet tee are most reluctant to suspend the journal first published in New Zealand, and which has been sustained, through fluctuating times and circumstances, for very nearly four years. In reviewing the future, we see no promise of improvement in the prospects of the Colony within some tioo years, and we cannot afford to incur a loss of some hundreds per annum during that period. We have detet mined to economise to the utmost extent, and continue our journal. The alteration we must, however, make, to meet the state of the times, is to issue the paper weekly, instead of semiweekly. After the -first of April, therefore, the New Zealand Gazette and Wellington Spectator will be issued weekly, and on Wednesday. The price of the paver will be as now, ten shillings per quarter, and single numbers will be raised to one shilling each. Advertisements will be charged at present rates, and trill never be inserted gratis. Stringent economy and great industry must be the order of the day. Let all be actuated by this conviction, and not only relief but progress *»a 7/ be secured to th» Colony, in defiance of all the evils with which me have had and have to contend.
