WANGANUI.
The Nelson Packet has just returned from that settlement. Oo her way there she called ■ at Cloudy Bay, and while there the Captain and crew broached the cargo, for which act it was thought prudent to clear the ship of a 1 of them. The Captain retained the clearance, and the vessel was obliged to proceed to her destination without it. On arrival at Wanganui, the supercargo was annoyed with the officious interference of three of the unpaid magistrates, Messrs. King, Nixon, and Campbell. The leader it was thought would not have been so troublesome had he not been seeking some trumpery Government employment. The vessel and cargo would have been abandoned to the tender mercies of these gentlemen, .had it been likely that in case of obtaining an action at law for damages against them, the amount would have been recovered, without severely distressing them. Even supposing these gentlemen had any right to interfere, which wa do not admit, it was their duty to have aided, under the circumstances, rather than to have given the party in question trouble. By an advertisement in our paper, it will be seen St. Andrew's Day, is to be celebrated by a dinner as usual, At Barrett's Hotel. We trust that there will be a strong muster, and we are requested to state that the dinner is not of an exclusive character, but that the Scotch will be happy to meet their friends of other origins on that day. THE THEATRE.. . Mr. Davies will make his first appearance on Tuesday next, and from his reputed excellence as an actor, and the capital evening'! entertainment offered, vre make no doubt but that the public will liberally support him.
