POLICE COURT.
Thursdat, October 12, 1843. A number of men applied for permission to cut fire wood, which was ganted on condition that they kept twenty feet on each side of the hairori road.
William Taylor was charged by Mr. George Young, of the South Sea Hotel, with having stolen a gold ring set with pearls, of the value of five pounds his property. H . AN , s r 0N > appeared for the complainant. William^Woods produced the ring which was identified by Mr. Young as the one he had lost, He saw it the day before yesterday, on Taylor's finger; Taylor told him that a woman named Knowland, had made him a present of it, and when requested he exchanged the ring for one belonging to Woods. The Prisoner in his defence, stated, that Knowland gave him the ring last July, and was conobprated in this statement' by Joseph Munden, who recollected Knowland giving the prisoner a ring in July, which he believed to be the one produced. The case was then adjourned until Tuesday, for the purpose of producing Mrs. Knowland. Mr. TJumat Drake appeared to answer a complaint of setting fire to some rubbish on hi* own premises. Mr. Holroyd attended for Mr. Drake. The charge was of a frivolous character, and not being within any statutable enactment, the magistrate very properly dismissed the case without a hearing. * Captain Cruikthank, of the schooner Arid* waa summoned by Daniel Joyce for the recovery of wages due to him whilst mate on board the said. schooner. h " .-/ " : . shew that he had been thrust, out of the vessel at Kafia, that he had subsequently got on board again and secreted himself for the purpose of getting to Port Nicholson to obtain redress. The defence of Captain Cruikshahk for not discharging Joyce's claim was that the complainant had allowed a boat to be taken from the vessel by a number of men armed, he being conscious of the circumstance at the time. The Magistrate awarded to the complainant £20 and costs.
