PUBLIC MEETING.

Land :Ci.aims. — In our leading article, we have gone pretty fully into the subject of the late negociation on the Land Claims. The result was communicated by Colonel Wakefield on Friday morning, to the deputation which had been appointed at the Public Meeting on Wednesday, and was by the deputation communicated to another Public Meeting on Friday afternoon, when the following resolutions were passed. Proposed by Mr. Penny, seconded by Mr. D. Scott : —

That a Memorial be forwarded to the Local Government, pointing out the rumour position of the Settlers in consequence of the non-settle-ment of the Land Question, whereby they have hitherto been prevented from obtaining possession of the lands they had purchased from the New Zealand Company four years ago, and^ the bad feelings and distrust which are entertained in consequence by the Natives towards the Settlers and latterly also towards the Local Government; and praying that the Land Claims may be forthwith settled, since that alone can prevent the absolute ruin of the Colony. Proposed by Mr. Revans, seconded by Mr. Waters: — , / Thata copy of the proceeding resolution be forwarded to Mr. Spain, to present to the Local Government. Proposed by Mr. Alderman Wallace, seconded by Mr. Alderman Lyon :—: — That a copy of the first resolution be forwarded immediately to the Agent of the New Zealand Company.
