MEETING OF THE COUNCIL.

Saturday, July 1, 1843. council met. Present — Mr. Hunter Mayor, in the chair. Messrs. Aldermen Lyon, Johnson, Jenkins, Guyton, Fitzherbert. Minutes of former meetings read and confirmed, A letter from Joseph White, of Wade's Town, proposing to rent thirty acres of the Town Belt, commencing at the north-west extremity of the same, for the terra of fourteen years, at the annual rent of five shillings per acre for the first seven years, and ten shillings for the remaining seven years — read. Mr. Lyon proposed — # That the same be offered for public competition at the minimum rates therein mentioned, and that a notice be inserted in the Newspapers to the effect. Mr. White requested leave of absence for six weeks, which was granted nem. con. Adjourned till Satarday, the Btb July, at 10 o'clock. ' "

To the Editor nf the " New Zealand Gazette and Wellington Spectator." 4 Sir, — By giving insertion to the following lines, you will much oblige your most obedient servant. - On account of certain false' rumours which have been circulated about me, concerning the selling of gunpowder, I take this the most public method of denying any such false and unfounded remarks that have been invented, and by your permission I will briefly state the facts. A few days back, after the disturbance with the Maories had taken place, some gentlemen called upon me and requested that I would not sell any gunpowder to the Natives, which request I complied with, and ,from jthat day to this I assert that I have not sold any to either white man or Native; and that I am ready to ! prove to any person that will come forward and say I have. Notwithstanding I might have said I would, through being attacked by some persons in a very ungehtlenianly manner upon the above subject, which put me a little out of temper at the moment: the gentlemen who visited me were Messrs. Fitzherbert, Penny, Boulcott, and' others, which; gentlemen I think, from the slight knowledge they have of me, would not for one moment doubt the above lines. And moreover, as a settler here, I think' I have the same interest in the welfare of the Colony as any other person ; and it would be getting a rod for my own back, were I to do anything which would be injurious to either Port Nicholson or its inhabitants. I remain, Your obedient servant, ' , ' * . - - M. AsHJJR. Lambton-quay, June 27,' 1843.

To the Editor of the " New ' Zealand Gazette anp Wellington Spectator." Mr. Editor.—- If you are " pleased to give insertion to the following lines, you will oblige Your's sincerely, .An 1 Emigrant. Why did I leave my native land ■ In brighter climes to roam, To gain from some reluctant hand A spot for future home ? A cherished hope — through every ill— Of future wealth, and peace — But the wimpling bourn, and green clad hill, No time can e'er eflace. From hearts where nature fondly placed The stamp of British power, Which' throb with love to those who faced The wild barbarian bower, Of those who rend our dearest ties, . Have pierced our hearts wjth pain — By all the power that in us lies Such acts shan't be again ! New hopes shall bloom, the brow o£ care WiU-yet expand with joy — Our smiling homes, who dare S who dare 1 Molest, or yet annoy ? - The spirit of our Father land Will cheer us on our way : And when united heart and hand For Wellington huzza. Wellington July 3, 1843.
