Are Men Selfish?
Looking back, one must acknowledge that the provision, of accommodation in large cities has been directly centred upon, the needs of men, little attention being paid to the comfort and housing of girls, whose daily occupation may be in factory, shop or office. At present, in Wellington, the situation is very acute; in many cases girls are absolutely unable to obtain ■board and residence at a figure which, their salaries will warrant. The Young Women's Christian Association, long ago perceived the necessity of providing economical boarding accommodation for the young ladies and have for many years been operating two houses; however, the demand now is so great that the Y.W.C'.A. have recently extended their system by purchasing another house in a.central position, which, 'after^ the necessary alterations and additions
have been, completed, will be . capable of accommodating 80 boarders, and will be installed with, every facility to provide the comforts and restfulness of a real home. This is a splendid step in the right direction to overcome the present serious lack of accommodati'on; but before the Y.W.C.A. can go ahead with, their new schemes for this building and for further extension to provide accommodation for general city acti-" vities, money must be acquired. The estimated figure is £15,000, for which _a public appeal is now being made. It is hiopedl that readers will donate generously to such a worthy undertaking. The chairman of the executive is Mr H. D. Bennett, and the treasurer is Mr A. D. Bayfeildy Box 1071, Wellington, to. whom all donations should be sent, . ■ •■■-;•
