BETTER ACCOMMODATION FOR THE OFFICE AND SHOP-GIRL. For the last five years the attention or a, generous public has been almost entarely directed towards the necessities and comforts of our fighting men. Institutions for the special benefit of girls have naturally suffered some neglect on this account. Thus at the present time we are faced with a blem that must be solved l . It is the care "and accommodation of the hundreds of Wellington girls who have to support.themselves by their earnings in shop, factory, or office. The salaries of these girls are meagre, and in many cases they cannot afford the class of boarding-house which accommodates* their male fellow-workers. It is for this section of the community that the Young Women's Christian Association caters. At present a special effort is being made to raise £15,000 for the extension of the activities of the Association 111 this direction. A buildinp - has already been purchased in Brougham street, but extensive alterations and additions are needed', besides furnishings. The house next the corner of Boulcott and Willis streets, which has been in use since about 1915 as a Soldiers' Hostel, is the old home of the Y. W.C. A. It was lent to the soldiers' but is now , available to the girls* once more. Here again, however, many alterations and a good deal of furnishings are required before the building can be converted into a really convenient recreation centre with home comforts. When the developments outlined are accomplished the Y.W.C.A. will have boarding accommodation on a modern scale for at least 50 more girls than they have at present. First of all, however, money isi needed. You will be appealed to for help. Give as your conscience dictates.
