Wanganui in Wisps.

Dear Cukistabel, — . »•■ FTTIHJ3 distressing ateidr-nt at jT~ cliff, resulting in the drowning of three well-known residents, has cast si great gloom over tin; place, especially Oβ the bodies have not yet been recovered. Messrs. Oswald Lewis. P. C. Bcgfey and probably Mr. W. B. Baternan had been fishing in the launch Monarch and were coming home on Tuesday morning. The launch appar<mtlv foundered. They were seen in the "early morning, shipping heavy «eas, but, unfortunately, this was not reported until late in the afternoon, when it was too iate and not a sign of anything was then visible. Much of the wreckage has come ashore, but 'so far no trace of the victims. e * » «• Mr. O. Lewis was until recently farming'■at. Mangamahu, but had been living at Castlccliff for a little time. He leaves a wife (sister of the Hon. T. VVilford) and two children. Mr. P. C. Beglcy has. lived in Wanganui for many years and took a very -active 'part in manv public matters. He, too, leaves a. wife and two young children. There is still .some doubt as to the identity of the third man, but it is supposed to be a Mr. Baieman, of Nukumaru. * * * * The garnering of our married defenders "is going on apace. With the moving on to the second letter of the alphabet of the Second Division, names "familiar and beloved" appear in cold type. It's an-untidy haired, hungrylooking and low-spirited Wanganiri we're going to be with half-a-dozen hairdressers, as many grocers, and three hotelkeepers taken from us in one hit. e • ■ • • Miss M. Newcombe is about again after a return to hospital and a very bad few weeks of it. Her friends hop© that she is now on the way to a real •recoverv. " « »■ «■ «■ Mrs. D. L. Robertson, widow of Lieut. D. L., Robertson, lately killed in France, died .in Dunedin during the week. Mrs. Robertson had been in delicate health for more than two years and was very iil when the word came of her husband's death, so that, probably, the fearful shock sustained hastened the end. I>uring their few years in Wanganui the Robertson family endeared themselves to the many with whom their work brought them in contact, and many there are whose hearts go out to the little three-year-old son. 9 .* •» * Captain Herbert Hutson, N.Z.M.C, was married to Sister M., Galloway, N.Z.A.N.S:. at Hornchurch, England, on 9th February of this year. Dr. Hutson was well known here. He was medical superintendent of the local hospital at the time of his going on military duty. ■* * * * A 'prettv wedding took place at the Church of" Christ on Saturday, 20th April, when Private A. Cairns and Miss Florence Williams, both of Wanganui, weer married by Pastor N. G. Noble. The maids were Miss Grace Metzenthin and Miss Vera Voyce, and Mr. John Cairns acted as best man. The guests were entertained at the residence of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs, A. J. Williams, Aramoho. ■» * * * Some of our educational meetings have been lively, to say the least of them. At one lately, where the folk who voiced ideas were pillars of so-

oiety. office-bearers- ir. church, and fullblown Ja-vyers. some odd expressions were used. One person was told to get his "iK'.'i'l read": while another was accused o; "wanting to have a spout" sit This last expression had to he revised. After that everything weiu <»n peacefully and nothing was disturbed, ho that opinions were in about tin' iann; place as before the nwtiiii:. Ycrars sincerely, -Whielwixd.
