The annual ocean race of the P.N.Y.C. to Port Underwood "took place last Saturday under most favourable conditions. The wind was a steady full sail N.W. and there was very little, rough water in the Straits. The competitors were: Waitangi (scr), Kotiri hours), Atalanta (3£ hours), White Heather (3 hours), and lolanthe (6 hours). All got smartly away except the Waitangi, which was on the wrong tack. However, she quickly got going and was the first to disappear round Jerningham, followed by the White Heather and Kotiri. Good weather was experienced on the trip across the Straiti The Waitangi was the first round the mark boat. The others were unfortunate in getting becalmed for some time. The winner proved to he the lolanthe, which saved her handicap by 26 minutes. The Waitangi was second, and the Atalanta third. The winner was also successful last year, but the competition on that occasion was a one-sided affair, as most of the boats put back, and the little second-class yacht accomplished the journey by herself. G. McLean sailed the lolanthe, and l his father, J, Mcr Lean, the White Heather.
