. Mr. A. N. Poison announces elsewhere that he is out as an Independent Liberal candidate for the expected vacancy in the Wellington North seat in Parliament. For 10 years past Mr. Poison has been a Ministerial Private Secretary, and for the last five years he has been private secretary to the Hon. Dr. Poraare. He informs us that he is politically supported by Dr. Thacker, M.P. for Christchurch East.
The following extract from a letter written by a young New Zealander the night before he went over the top for the very last time reveals the grand spirit that animates our brave young fellows even, when facing death itself: —"Well, my dearest mother, I am in a desperate hurry. We are going into the line to-night and over the top to-morrow. You know what that means. But I have little fear. I know your powerful prayers go with me. I shall write you a long letter as soon as we come out. I only wish I had time to write now as fully as I desire and just to tell you what my thoughts are at the present time and how, as ever, thought of you are uppermost in my mind. But time does not allow and such things must be left unsaid. . . . I hope—l firmly believe:—that early in the New Year we may all see one another once again. Meanwhile, wishing you all the very best and choicest of blessings.—Your affeectionate son. j>
