HIS WORSHIP THE MAYOR

"'■A;.Good Citizen's Good Work. T&ifTR. ■ and Mrs. J. P. Luke> well de-i-YJL serve the. sincere congratulations which have been showered upon them on the re-election, of Mr. Luke as Mayor of Greater "Wellington. To be four times Mayor of tlie.capital city of the Dominion is. no mean honour. In Mrw Luke's case it is an honour which has been : earned by unceasing industry in the service of the citizens. Other mayors: .may- have at times regarded; the position, of Chief Magistrate of the city from a political and Parliamentary than rfx-om a purely and strictly civic point.of view. Mr. Luke makes.no such mistake. _ His first and only objective is the continued and increased welfare of the city and the comfort and convenience of its citizens. ; IVJi\, Luke himself would be "the last to claim that anything and everything in the- civic government of Wellington is faultless. So far, however, as personal endeavour, unremitting industry, and unselfish sacrifice of leisure in the city's service are concerned, it would be difficult to find a more efficient Mayor than Mr. Luke. He is eminently a loyalist. He recognises that the duty of every loyal New Zealander it to do his utmost to ne lp on the good cause of his. country and the Empire, and he has never spared himself in this direction. s°° s . ' Just a few closing words to express the high esteem in which the public of Wellington hold the Mayoress., Mrs. Luke has been untiring in organising and helping on every movement to insure the comfort and welfare of the gallant fellows who go to the front to fight the' Empire's battles and so many of whom come back to the land of their birth sick or crippled. Mr. Luke possesses in his estimable helpmate a pearl, bevond price, and it was with unfeigned pleasure that the public read his reply to the compliments so justly paid his good wife.
