THE BLACK NOTE IN FURNISHING.
Some of the new furnishings are very sombre in tone, and among the carpets we saw recently in the newly-arranged Carpet and Linoleum Department at Te Aro House are several with a black .background; others, beautiful Indian idea in carpets, the oval-shaped fug. colouring and would look well on dark floors. Some of the newest Wilton piles are made up in lovely Persian. patterns, and to arrive very soon is the newest idea, in carpets, the oval-hsaped rug.. I* or a cheap and effective floor covering the Japanese seagrass mats cannot be beaten. They are in several sizes, and with, stencilled borders in three colours, ,and are more effective and much more durable than tlie "matting," which was the substitute for carpets at one time. Te Aro House sells the 36-inch mat for a bare 2s 6d, and every size proportionately up to the full room sauare for 49s 6d.--
