All Sorts of Sport.
Sports and the War. There were some well-known athletes who went away with the Reinforcements last Saturday morning. Amongst those 1 noticed were: A. T. Duncan, the champion amateur athlete and University three-quarter; Tai Heketa, the old St. James three-quarter; "Tim" Brewer, the representative hockey player; and G. Howe, the University and Wellington representative wicket'keeper. These are faces I picked out on the march, and no doubt there were many others who have made names for themselves on the sports fields of the Dominion. _„■■-• ' * • - • * Boxing. Mr. Sid Baker, a member of a wellknown Sydney sporting firm, has sent a cheque for £200 to the "Referee." In a covering letter he says:—"l, as an Australian, am anxious to see Les Darcy unassailably established as mid-dle-weight champion of the world. ...II am prepared to back him for £1000 a-side, or more." It is hoped that Mike Gibbons, of America, will accept the challenge, the match, if arranged, to take place in Sydney. Mr. R. L. Baker,, approached on the matter, stated his willingness, on behalf of Stadiums, Ltd., to give a. purse of £2000 to a fully accredited acceptor of the challenge, Mike Gibbons preferred. Here is something for the fight fans to look forward to. Fred Kay cut-manoeuvred Tommy Uren at the Sydney Stadium on Saturday week in a fast contest that went the full twenty rounds. • * * * Miss Eileen Lee, the daughter of the Teddington (London) lock-keeper, recently put up a big swimming performance, eclipsing all records, made by men as to time. She swam * a distance of 23J miles on the Thames River in 7 hours 1 minute. Fred Gardner, the well-known Rugby player, has enlisted, and goes into camp directly. He learned how to play the game of Rugby at Wellington College, and as a wing-forward played for the Old Boys and Poneke Clubs, and represented Wellington. Fred should make a good soldier.
