■ P. O'Shea, the well-known Chxist--thurch cyclist, put up the fastest time ■(shrs o6mins 54secs) in the Timaru- to Christchurch bicycle road race last Saturday. The race was won by J?; A. Sutherland (Timaru), who had 25mins. stitrt. D. McKenzie (Timaru), 28mins,;; being second, and P. ■ Hill (Eltham), " 21niins, third. O'Shea was placed fourth. ' Christchurch rowing men are perturbed because the Avon River shows signs . of drying up, and it has been suggested to construct a dam to keep the river -deep enough for rowing purposes. The handsome AH Red mil be represented on the track in the near future by & filly, rather appropriately named Misread. Her dam is Miss Dorrien. Misread is to be broken in immediately, and may be tried out before the end of the present season. She has splendid shoulders, is deep-ribbed, and all over a fine mare. She was bred by Mr. P. Kelly, of Oamaru. Somebody said that Rugby football was on the decline in California. This, from the American correspondent of the "Sydney Referee," tells another tale: — "The season is now in full swing here, and promises to be the best this State has ever seen. There are more men playing Rugby, more teams, more spectators, and more enthusiasts." Each of the players in the ; English Rugby League team which visited Australia and New Zealand last year received a bonus of £60 out of the profits of the tour. As the number of players was 26, the sum distributed in bonuses was £1500. This represents one-third of the profits from the tour, w*hich therefore must have been £4500—-a very handsome return for five months' travelling. Each player received an allowance of 10s per week on the boat and 30s per week, from ■the time of landing in Sydney, so that they did very well financially out of the venture. The English Hockey has cancelled all international, divisional, county and club fixtures for the 1914-1 £ season just commencing, on account of the war. It is estimated that the hockev players in.England represent 40,000 able-bodied men.

The Germans at home must have profitted greatly by the luggage which tourists, fleeing from their country, were forced to leave behind them. One report says that baggage abandoned by travellers who were obliged to leave the ■country in a hurry, is piled up to the height of two stories in front of the famous Cologne Cathedral. Some Americans left behind them in Europe as many as forty trunks. Grand opera stars rushing away from the war area left a big collection of baggage at various towns on the Continent. Mr. R. A. Wright announces in this issue that he is contesting the Wellingix>n Suburbs seat at the General Election as a Government candidate. He has a long and honourable record as a citizen ■of Wellington, and has previously represented one of the local electorates m Parliament. He has already started his -campaign, and is addressing meetings r. different parts of his constituency.
