WHEN the conductor of the car from the Newtown Zoo came through, he stopped before Mrs. Vere de Vere, and said, "Fa^-ur— urs, P Mre". Vere de Vere said "My husband will pay for me." The conductor looked around on the serried ranks of femininity doubtfully. "Were is he?" he asked. "In the smoking carriage." "There are a dozen men in there, was the reply. "How am Ito know which one is your husband? What kind of looking man is he?" "Handsome. He is tall, he wears a blue overcoat, and he's got the nicest black moustache, and.the kindest brown eyes you ever saw. The conductor went away, only to return a moment later. "Look," he Baid, "he won't pay. He says you ain't his wife." ' ~ ■ ""Well what do you think of that i gasped Mrs. Vere de Vere. }j "You must have asked the wrong man." < ■ "That's what I thought. To make sure I got the right one I asked every man out there." _• - Mrs. Vere de Vere blushed deeply. "This is outrageous," she said. Tell him please—the dark-eyed man—that l haven't my purse with me, and to please pav my car fare at price. • "Yes, ma'am," said the conductor. Again he retired to the smoking compartment. When he came through the next time he podded to Mrs. Vere de Vere encouragingly. ' "It's all right," he said. "He paid __ »» After a while the car, stopped at Mrs. Vere de Vere's street. She went out the front way and waited for Vere_de Vere, to join her. But the car passed and he did not appear. . . She stood at the corner looking anxionslv up and own the street. Soon another car stooped and Vere de got off.
