ROYD GARLICK.
The Indiscreet Government and the Innocent Expert. THE public is left in. no doubt as to the position relative to the Government,'the Opposition, and Mr. Royd Garlick. £he committee that sat found that Mr. Garlick was a capable exponent of physical culture, which was well known beforehand, but that it would have been better to have' invited applications for the position to which he was appointed. Well, of course. * * * » Mr. Garlick emerges from the ordeal without a stain on his professional character. He is proved to be a respectable young man of undoubted ability and considerable ambition, who had done nothing wrong. Nor is there any sort of proof that in appointing Mr. Garlick the Government was guilty of any misdemeanour or corrupt act. It is not even proved that the appointment was a bad appointment; all that is proved is that the manner of the appointment was blaaingly indiscreet. Mr. Allen made a tremendous mistake when he made the appointment without calling for applications for flie post.
- ;-It is true ; that previous Administrations .frequently did the same sort of thing: but' this Government has always set itself up to be- assort of 'righteous protest against previous Administrations; The position, as we have itnowy is unsatisfactory at all points. There" ia no proof that the Government,' by advertising, might not have got, a" more brilliantly, endowed man for the on the wages, and, conversely, there" is no proof that the Government might-have done, anything of the sort. Mr. Garlick, the innocent victim of-these circumstances, has been pilloried for much gratuitous abuse, and is permanetly belittled m.the estimate of the thoughtless' mob. AIL sorts- of unpleasant things have happened, just because the essentially fair and - businesslike of advertising the position and inviting applications therefor was not.followed. :'■ ■■'-■■.
