Amateur Athletics.
The sports at the Basin Reserve on New Year's Day promise to exceed! in interest any previously held) in WelMngton. At least, that is the hop© of tlhe Wellington Centre of the NewZealand Amateur Athletic Association, and that hody of gentlemen ane leaving mo stone unturned to make tihem a great success. Among the competitors in the championships air© such well-known, names as L. B. Webster (New Plymouth), T. Qraig (Wangamui) as well as tihe local champions — F. W. B. Goodibehere, J. Prendenrille, H. H. Dawson, F. Boss and others. H. Ke-rr, tihe champion heel-and-toe exponent, who has just been reinstated, will be a competitor in tihe walking races. As he is an undoubted! champion, with a fair and free action, I have no doubt there will be many pleased to see a "walker" on tih© job. The entries for tihe different championship ©vents are as follow : — 100 yds, 9; 220 yds, 12; 440yd5,. 8; 880ydb, 5; mile, 6, hurdles, 6; walk, 8. As many a> thirty-five bay© nominated for tihe sprint handicaps. Special Highland events— -dlancamg and music — have been placed! on the programme, and! they will be controlled and conducted by members of tihe Wellington Caledonian Society. "Scots wha hae" should be there in good! force to hear the skirl of the bagpipes and to witness their national dances being competed in by masters of the art. Altogether, the Basin Reserve should be a good place to spend New Year's Day in.
