Rowing Notes.

By Native.

The Akaroa Regatta was held on the 16th in fine weathei. Akaioa won the Maiden Double Skulls and Junior Fours, Christchurch Amateur the Senior Double Sculls, Avon the Maiden Four, Union the Youths' Double Sculls, and Canter bury the Senior Pairs. The old champions, Crosbie and Samuels, also represented the Christchurch Amateurs in the Senior Pairs and Double Sculls, but did not finish in eithei lace, and weie evidently quite out of form. The innovation of four-oared rowing in outriggers was apparently a success, both of these laces being got off without any difficulty * ♦ Last week the challenge race in connection with the lepresentation of the Wellington Maiden Four regatta crew was rowed, and lesulted in the club selection being defeated by a length and a half after a good race. The winning crew, consisting of H. Jones, C. Jones, W. J. Evans, and F. J. Ellison, will now represent the club at regattas. The Kempthorne Fours of the same club were rowed out on Saturday afternoon. H. Jones, H. Dawson, D. Duff, and S. Evans winning the final by two lengths from H. McKinlay, F. J. Ellison, B. Wolf, and H. Waller. -t jt j* The Schools Championship inaugurated by the Wellington Club was rowed on Saturday. This was the first competition of the kind and occasioned considerable interest among the small fry. The Terrace won the final heat from Te Aro by three lengths. The winning crew consisted of Galvin and Nancarrow, who were coached by Mr. J. R. Ciawford. There is every probability of Tom Spencer representing the Wellington Club in the sculling race at Kawhia next month. •*■*■* A presentation was made to Mr. G. Lee, custodian of the Star Boating Club, on Friday evening. It was originally intended as a parting gift, but the Club having made arrangements with Mr. Lee to •continue his duties for a further term, it was fittingly described as a Christmas Box. The Club is to be congratulated in again securing Mr. Lee's services, as he is very attentive and trustworthy and also popular with the members. The Star Club Fitzgerald Fours were finished last. week. A. J. S. Thomson, J. M. Burnett, W. Y. Smith, and H. Barren defeating the popular fancy in D. R. Menzies, H. Smith, W. Wilkinson, and F. Nancarrow. Entries are now being received for the Senior and Junior Soulls, to be rowed on the 10th prox. In addition to the Maiden and Junior Fours already chosen, the Star Club have picked the following crews to represent them at Picton on New Year's Day. — Junior Pairs, W. R. C. Oswin and F. D. Johnson , Maiden Pairs, S. Wheeler and W. Hackworth. In connection with this, N. James and T. Hamer challenged the former, and the race took place on Thursday evening, Oswin and Johnson having an easy win. The Picton programme came to hand unexpectedly, and, in consequence the preparation of the local crews will have to be pushed on. The Star Club Challenge Maiden Pours thought that they were running too much risk in view of the Wanganui and Wellington Regattas, in challenging the present selection for the representation at Picton. According to the club rules a crew cannot be challenged more than once, which, I think, is a mistake. Again, the challengers have all the best of it, as, in this instance, they can take part in all club races up to the 4th February, and, if successful in the challenge race, represent the club in regatta races, whereas the present selection is debarred from competing; in club races I hear that the Petone Club is likely to be represented at Picton in the Maiden Fours. The new boat of the Stai Club will bo used in the Maiden and Junior Pairs at Picton. Frc-m appearances, I think that she will require a fair amount of extra weight to reach the minimum of 1251b5.

The Elle&mere "Guardian " the hustling Southern paper, sends the Laxce a choice card, on which the good wishes of its staff, from editor to "devil," are expressed. The Lance thanks the "Guardian," and hearhlv leciprocates the friendly erecting
