Ping-pong in Wellington. The shades of night were tailing fast, As from a toy-bazaar there pass'd A youth, who bore, the crowd amid, A box, with this upon the lid, "Ping-pong." •'Try not the game," an old man said, "Play draughts or tiddlywmks instead , Avoid it, sir, while yet you can!" He said, "Go to' you ancient man, Pmg-pong." "O stay !" a maiden said, "I bid," (Twas wrong of her, and yet she c. "And throw that dreadful game awav." He said, "My dear, excuse me play,' Pmg-pong I" He reached Ins home and started plav And with his household, night and day, Competed, till he soon became A mighty champion of the game' Pmg-pong.
He beat his fond, but stout, mamma, He beat his Lambton Quay papa, Has sister Jane and brother Pat He readily defeated at Ping-pong. He beat them all, no matter who, His cousins, aunts and uncles, too ; And when they then the game forsook He taught th© parlourmaid and cook Ping-pong. He never drank, he never fed, He never even went to bed ! In oonsequnce at last he died, And with his fleeting breath he cried "Pmg-pong!" Upon his splendid marble tomb Is writ the glory of his doom ; In words, of gold, that everyone Who reads that epitaph may shun "Ping-pong !"
