New Zealand Colonist. TUESDAY, JANUARY 24, 1843.
We are pleased to witness the gradual triumph of those moderate principles, with regard to the settlement of the Native question, which we have uniformly advocated. Not because we stood in need of any such confirmation of the soundness of our view, but because it appears to furnish a pledge for the speedy adjustment of all existing differences. Of the wish of the Government to put every purchaser under the New Zealand Company in possession of his land, we have never entertained any doubt, nor that this could in almost all cases, perhaps in every case, be effected by negociations entered into in a spirit of fairness. Our only apprehensions were founded upon the seeming impatience of the Settlers, and their determination to acquiese in no settlement which did not at once recognize, in the amplest manner, the validity of their title to every acre of land which had been nominally given out to them. This feeling has gradually subsided, and its removal clears away the only difficulty in the final adjustment of the mattei. At the levee held on Saturday, an address was presented to the Acting Governor, by the deputation appointed at the meeting to which we referred in our last. Unfortunately', no copy of this- address had been previously forwarded to His Excellency, and he was not, therefore, prepared with a written reply. The reply made at the time appeared to be perfectly satisfactory to the deputation. We believe, also, that on the same occasion the Natives were informed of the nature of the arrangements which had been made for the determination of any claims which they might urge, and that they expressed themselves highly pleased. ,
