We have been favored by Captain Macfarlane, of the schooner Kate, with the following account of a reef of rocks observed by him on two occasions, off Portland Island, Table Cape. We shall at all times be grateful for any information afforded by captains of trading vessels, which may tend to render our coastwise navigation less dangerous, the incorrectness of the charts being proverbial.
Extract from the Log of the “ Kate." “ Sept. 22, 4 p.m.—Off Portland Island, Table Capo, about four miles, running to the northward, with a heavy sea, and wind at south ; saw a reef outside of us, between two and three miles, and could hear the break; made the bearings of the reef to the north-east, by compass, ofl‘ Portland Island, distant six or seven miles from it.
11 Sept. 25. —Passing Table Cape to the southward, stood in shore of the reef, and with very little sea, observed the rocks distinctly a few feet above water. “ J. Macfarlane, Master. “ Wellington, October 21, 1842.”
