THE REBELS AND THEIR MOVES.
|On Saturday the rumour was rife that the Wairoa [Redoubt had been attacked, and, at night fall, [the Rev. Mr. Lanfear, who came in from the (Thames, reported that from 14 to 15 canoes with [about 200 armed natives had put into the island [of Pouni, a very short distance from the Wairoa. {The microscopic vision of Auckland panicjmongers, immediately enlarged this Maori continfgent to 1500, men and, of course, a good deal of ensued. The main fact, however, being [indisputable, the Sandfly got up steam, and though [the night was dark and dismal, blowing a strong [gale from the Eastward, with rain falling in torrents, she put to sea in quest of the foe, with what result we have yet to learn. I Yesterday we were treated to a startling yarn that 400 friendly natives, armed by Government, [had gone over to the enemy, bag and baggage. Upon enquiry, we learn that only 80 stand of arms —double barreled and other guns of inferior [quality —have been placed in native hands. This [is as it should be. For, we shall require all our farms and warlike munitions for the good men and (true who have responded to our invitation and are [flocking to our standard. For these, we ai’e happy to hear there are arms In sufficiency. Might |wc inquire are these auxiliaries to be regimented; [and, if so arranged, are they to have no distinguishing characteristics —no colours under which i to rally ? 1 -
