TIT FOR TAT.
To the Editor of the New-Zealander. Sir,—Although I am not an habitue of the gallery, old associations sometimes lead me thither when in town. The other day, happening to be there, I heard Mr. Carleton declare on the consideration of raising the £50,000 loan, that he would not trust the Superintendent with the expenditure of a single shilling. A scene which occurred in the Council in 1854 was brought vividly before me—when a loan for £45,000 being before the Council Mr. Williamson, then member for the Pensioner Settlements declared, " that he would not sanction the expenditure of this money by Mr. Carleton the Provincial Secretary, who was tie facto Superintendent. Who was Mr. Carleton? asked that gentleman, that they should entrust him with the handling of such a sum?" I well remember the chagrin of the member for the Bay - and the subsequent expenditure of the money, used, as much of it was, for the purpose of purchasing political support, showed how true were the remarks ot the member for the Pensioner Settlements. Matters are now reversed, and Mr. Carleton has had his long nursed little fling at the Superintendent. This is one of many instances where old grudges underlie the current of present opposition. Much of the action taken by both Mr. Carleton and Captain Daldy may be traced to the irritation produced by old political sores, and does not proceed as those unacquainted with the minutue of Auckland politics during the past nine years might suppose, and as these two gentlemen would wish it to be thought, from purely public grounds. lam, Sir, An Ex M.P.C.
