HAWKE'S BAY.

Bt favor of the Captain of H.M. gunboat Caroline, we have received papers from Hawke's Bay to the 10th inst. Speaking of the roads at present under construction by the Military in this Province (Auckland), and the opportunity afforded to the Government of carrying on their policy, through the application made by William Nera, for assistance to open a road from the river Waipa to Raglan through the heart of the Waikato country, the Herald alludes to the interesting remarks of Macaulay on this subject:— Lord Macaulay in speaking of the troubles in the Highlands caused by the adherence of the clans to the Jacobite cause, says—" Experience taught the English Government that the weapons by which the Celtic clans would be most effectually subdued were the pickake and the spade." Experience will teach the same lesson in New Zeeland. The most effectual and most lasting triumphs to be obtained by the English Government in this country over the New Zealand tribes will be by means of the pickaxe and the spade, which will make the interior of the country accessible and open the way for European colonization. A destructive fire has occurred in Napier, a full account of which will be found in another column. OTAGO. We learn from the Colonist of the Ist of April that a Gazette dated 25th March, has been issued summoning the Provincial Council to meet on Wednesday, 16th April, at 12 o'clock. From the diggings' correspondent of the same journal we find that more than J ,000 men have left Gabriel's and Weatherston's gullies during the past forghtnight. The miners are beginning to turn their attention to washing the clay on the surface in the Bendigo style at which it is stated handsome wages can be earned. The building for the Hospital was progressing rapidly. From the Daily Times of the 4th April, we see that the Escort arrived at the gold oflice on the 3rd, with 6,091 0/3., lOdwfs. * ozs. dwts.
