TEMPERANCE SOIREE.

On the evening of Easter Monday, a Soiree was held in the Odd Fellows' Hall, by the members ol the Auckland Total Abstinence Society and their friends. The attendance was most encoui aging, j for, though the utunisdon whs l»y tickets .at 2a,

each, the number at tea would not be far short of 300. Immediately after tea the hall was filled to overflowing. The arrangements were novel, and, what must have beeu gratifying to the committee, most successful. The speakers were restricted to about 15 minutes, and between each speaker the whole company joined in singing a temperance song set - to some well known air. The audience were furnished with a programme, on which were printed the words of the songs. As far as we could judge from the happy expression upon every face, the evening's entertainment gave complete satisfaction. The speakers were Mr. W. Rattray, President of the Society, and Messrs Tremain, Hirst, Simms and Morris. Many pointed anecdotes were told illustrative of the danger of' tampering with strong drink, and the principles of total abstinence were ably set forth and inculcated. A few names were, at the close of the meeting, added to the Roll of members. Tea, &c., were supplied by the ladies, which would leave a considerable part of the proceeds of the meeting to be appropriated to the fund for building the Temperance Hall. We have not heard what was the amount realized, hut as we understand that subscription cards are to be put into the hands of the Committee and others, we hope soon to learn that they have such a sum in ihe Bank as will enable them by a little farther exertion to make the Temperance Hall itself a "great fact."
