lie just and fear nut: Let nil the ends thou aim'st a, thy Couutry's, Thy Tod's, and Truth's.
The news conveyed by tie ' Williom Denny' has not been without is influence upon the colonists of Auckland, nasmuch as we learn from the 'Provincial Government Gazette* subjoined, that Colond Wynyard has found it necessary to resign ihe office of Superintendent. We heartily hope that his retirement may not be mace the occasion of embroiling the Proviacein an angry and contested election. Sone consideration is due to the interests of .he colony, and surely some satisfactory arrangement can be made, by which a Supeintendent possessing as much as posible the confidence of the public, aid disposed to cooperato in concer and cordiality with tho Provincial Couicil, may be appointed. With an efficient Executive and a Superintendent of modertto views, the reins of power may be heh with great advantage to all classes and wihout interruption to that course of bencfical legislation in which tho Provincial Guncil has so far and so hopefully advanc<d. If the good seise of the Province should lead to this eoncksion, then indeed the retirement of His Honor will be less to be regretted. If, en the other hand, a contest shall bo fumd inevitable, wo may well deplore hi resignation at such a juncture. In the meantim we would urge tho eiecors to beware how they pledge themsehes rashly. And, as a security against ;hosc scenes which render contested elections so deplorable, we would lain suggest to the Provincial Council the great advunia<e that would result from the immcdiaU enactment of a stringent Bribery Bill. The followhg is the intimation conveyed by His aonor:—
TO THE ELECTORS OF THE PKOVINCP OF AUCKLAND.
Gentlemen, —Despatches have been received from the Secretary of State to the effect, that arrangements have been made by Her Majesty's Government that the 58th Regiment, which I command, shall return to England -without delay, and that I am to remain in New Zealand, to administer the Government of the Colony until a new Governor shall have arrived.
I have continued to hold the office of Superintendent of this Province, in expectation of beiri£ speedily relieved from that of Officer administering the Government of the Colony; but as it now appears certain, that. so long as I shall remain in New Zealand, 1 shall continue to hold the latter office, I think it right to resign the former; and I take this early opportunity of communicating to you that such is my intention. , . ~
I have been advised by. the Executive Council of the Province, that, instead of at once resigning, it would be more convenient that ;I should retain office, till the re-assembling of the Provincial Council on the sth of January next, in order that some of the business now before the Council, requiring immediate attention, may be completed. This advice I concur in and follow.
I will now merely add, that my resignation will not be delayed longer than the exigencies of the Public Service require, and that, on my retirement, I shall take an opportunity of giving expression to the deep obligation I feel myself under to the members of the Councils and to the electors generally, for the kindness and consideration 1 have received from, them. I have the honor to be, Gentlemen, Your obedient servant, K. H. Wynyard, Superintendent. Superintendent's Office, Auckland, December 27th, 1854.
