The following circular lias beoi) issued relative to soldiers filling the situations of clerks in inihUry offices on foieign stations :—: — "War Office, Jan. 13,1851. " Sir, — It having appeared to me thai thiough the incrcubed op|> irtuuitics of education which have been lately jifluided to the army, u ready means offered of obtaining soldiers from the ranki capable of filling the situations of clerks in these vet nl military offices on foreign stations, while at the same time a fair reward would b<~* secured to the well conducted and intelligent soldier. 1 have the honour to acquaint you that 1 have obtained the concurrence of the Commander inChief and the Lords Commissioners of har Majesiy'H Trcuaury in tho prospective introduction of such a meiisuro ; and I have -accordingly to request that on the occurrence of n varancy nmong the clerks hi the bcvciul military offices within your command, you will apply <o the Commanding officer of any regiment on the stntion to recommend to jou a steady and intelligent soldier capable of filling the same, utter n period of probation not exceeding three months. Tnis Boldier, if confirmed hr fit for the situation, shall be removed from his regiment, nnd be attested for general service, in order that while holding his office ho 6hall continue to be a soldier in the urmy ; and liable if removed fiom bin appointment for n regularity or iticupn* city, to he ordered to military duty with any regiment th n on the station. " Any man so confirmed in Ills appointment will hive the rani: and pay of Serjeant, with clothing, ration*, lodging and fuel, and light, or with money allowances in lieu thereof ; and will have the chance of rißing in some of the offices, by succession, to the senior clerkship, in which event be will be entitled to the rank, pay, and allowances of seijeant-miijor. " The service, us clerk, of tiny soldier, confirmed in the appointment, will be allowed to reckon towards pension un non-comtnkiioned officer.
