EASTER HYMN, For 1847.
'Tis the time of the Feiist— scribe, elder, and priest, Rejoice at the blood of the Passover shed ; But the hour is at hand — God hath cursed the land, And the triumph of Judah heaps guilt on his head! Like the first of a host, when the battle is lost, Commingling they come— for the mandate's abroad ! The sleepers awaken— but Christ is forsaken ;—; — Iscariot hath bartered the blood of his Lord ! The Judgment is passed — 'tis the first and the last, The finger of God hath decreed on the scroll! But the Chief of the hour, in pride and in power, Wash'd his hands of the sin— with the crime on his soul t He was mock'd, 'twas in vain— he reviled not again, But was led to the Cross, like a Lamb to the fold ; They pierced his side — He yielded and died j — A Sacrifice meet, for the sins of the world ! He hath bowed, He hath died—where are they that deride? The lips of the scorner wax pale with affright ! At the voice of his thunder, the rocks rend asunder, And the sunshine of day, turni to blackness of night !— The watchword was given— there was silence in Heaven, The last " Hallelujah" had melted away! But Jehovah hath spoken— that silence is broken— The Angel descendeth to ransom the Prey! He cometh in light— full of glory and might, And the chain of the Tyrant is riven in twain !— The Word is fullill'd— as he spake, he hath willed ! Hallelujah !— the Loid is arisen again. It. Choudace Jopiin. Auckland, March 31st, 1847.
