IMPORTS AND EXPORTS.

The sellers of this colony are, certainly, much indebted to 11 is Excellency, the present Governor, for the sensible, judicious plan which lias already been commenced, of directing the publication of various Returns, for general information, la our columns, this day, will be found one most important and interesting to the inhabitants of Auckland ; as it clearly shews the steady, healthful progress, in agriculture and commerce, of the Waitemata distiict; — and it proves, also, that, notwithstanding all the unqualified assertions, — false statements and exaggerated vnisiepresentations, put forth by our Southern cotemporaries, with reference to the comparative advantages and resources or' Auckland and "Wellington, — the former is infinitely superior. As our readers are aware, we, upon treating on these matters, and on the agitated question as to the capital, — have always disregaided, as well as abstained, purposely,— from mere assertion, and unless we could advance facts and figures, have never refened to the profciessi eveloptment of the resources of the

Waitemata district. But, now, we have before us figures for 1845, most triumphant and conclusive. Mark— first as to Shipping :—

Here is a balance of Foreign trade, in favor of Auckland, of 20 Vessels, amounting to four thousand ions* "With regard to the value of Imports and Exports, the official returns are equally gratifying.

These indisputable figures require no further comment from us ; and when it is borne in mind, that Auckland did not exist as a settlement, until a year and a half after the establishment of Wellington, we doubt not that our readers, as well as the whole of the settlers in the Waitemata district, will be perfectly satisfied, as to the real, comparative advantages, capabilities, and resources of Auckland and Wellington.
