SATURDAY, DECEMBER 13, 1845.
Be just and fear not: Let all the ends thou aims't at, be thy Country's, Thy God's, and I'ruth's.
On Sunday evening last, the Honble. E. I. C. Sloop of War " Elphinstone," returned from the Bay of Islamis, with His Excellency Governor Grey. The rebellious natives not having acceded to the terms of His Excellency, hostilities are about to be commenced immediately. Volunteers from the Militia embarked on Thmsday on board the Government Brig, and sailed for the Bay of Islands ; and the " British Sovereign" conveyed stores to the same destination on her voyage to Sydney. The Government Brig " Victoria," Captain Richards, arrived on Tuesday from the southern settlements, bringing our files of papers from Wellington and Nelson to the 22nd November. There is nothing of sufficient importance to occupy the space properly devoted to more interesting local affairs, occurring on the eve of our publication ; but there is much for animadversion, as well as for amusement, when our leisure permits, on the attempts now made by our southern co temporaries to. disparage Auckland, and the northern district — palpably with a view to induce our new Governor to change the seat of Government. On Wednesday, H. M. S. "Castor," 36 guns, arrived here from Hong^Kong which she left on the 28th September. We are much indebted to Captain Graham, his officers, for their politeness in conveying to us from the English colony of Hong Kong, the official Government organ — the " China Mail," up to the 25 th September ; by which we learn that now a regular line of steamers' communication is established'between London and Hong Kong, in fifty days; and that H.M. Steamer " Driver" was to leave Hong Kong at the same time as the " Castor," and her arrival, with .that of a forty-two gun frigate, the name of which we have not been able correctly to ascertain, may be hourly expected. The " Castor" sailed for the Bay of Islands on yesterday morning. The first Legislative Council under the Governorship of Captain Grey, assembled yesterday, the proceedings of which will be found in our columns. The papers relative to the financial state of the colony, laid before the Council by the Governor, will have our earliest attention. We only have space enough J on the present occasion to state, that the ba- j lance, against the colony, on the 15th Nov., of its assets and liabilities was £53,440 4s. Id.! ! !
