NOTICE TO MARINERS. [From the Government Gazette, Oct. 24.]
There is a very dangerous sunken rock lying between the.Gr.eat -and-Little Barrier Islands, (about three ?nd a quarter miles distant from the latter Island), from which the following bearings •were taken :— South end of the Little Barrier, or "Shoutonrou " Island, due west (magnetic). Wellington head (Great Barrier Island), north east, by north, I north. Eastern extremity of- Katiwau Island,south-west,£ south. Mutu Tahapa,a small sland near Cape Colville,'south east I east. The sea does not usually break upon this rock during moderate weather, but at times breakers can be seen on it" from several miles distance, and at low water the top of the rock may be seen amongst the breakers. The soundings taken showed three fathoms close to the breakers, and fourteen fathoms within a cable's length of them. David Rough, Harbour Master. Auckland, 22nd.Oct., 1845.
Calendar for November. — Continue to sow peas, French beans, early turnip, carrot, radish, lettuce, &c.j--)n the garden, for succession, plant celery in trenches, well prepared with rotfen manure $ transplant cabbages, cauliflower, &c. Sow rock arid -water melon, also- cucumber and pumpkins, keep the garden clear of all seeding weeds* Sow maize for crop, it may be also sown liroad, cast about two bushels per acre, for green food during the dry months, or to cut and make hay. Transplant the large varieties of cabbage on well prepared moist ground, ,they will ,be found excellentfood for milch Cows during the winte"? months." Sow mangel-wurzel and swedish turnip intended, for winter crop. Plant potatoes on moist ground.
