House of Lords. — April 4.
The Earl of Clarendon felt impelled, from (be studied want of courtesy observed in President Folk's inaugural addiess to this country, on the subject of the Oregon, to ask for information from the Foreign Secretary as to the present position of the negoci.itioTi. The Earl of Aberdeen was peisuadcd that if duty permitted him to lay the uegociutions that had taken place, before Parliament, not only the country, but all Europe, would applaud the pait taken by England therein. lam accustomed, said his Loidship. in other quarteis, to see myself, almost daily, described as puiillanimou-i, cowardly, mean, dastardly, truckling, and base, I need hardly say that I listen to these accusations, not so much with uulilierence, as with satisfaction; because I know perfectly well what they mean. I know how these terms of opprobiuni are to be unrleis'ood — how they see to be translated. I feel satisfaction when I find vitupeiative expressions thrown away upon conduct which I know is consistent with justice, with reason, with mcdeiMtion, and with common scusc. He held war to be the greatest of cmses, but nevertheless there were limits to forbearance ; and he could only say, that s\e rights, which in our opinion, are clear and unquestiouab c•, and by the blessing' of God, and with your support, those rights we are fully prepared to maintain (loud cheers from all sides.) i The subject then d'opped.
