SOUTH AUSTRALIA
The Legislative Council was rnpidly getting thtough the business before it. A bill had been introduced making permanent pi o vision for the Governor's salary, which is mci eased to £1500 a year. The report that all port charges and wharfage rates have been abolished is confirmed, and Adelaide is now a free port. The colonists of boufh Australia are so much pleased with the conduct of Governor Grey in lhis matter, that a public meeting was called for the 12th in&tant, to vote him an addi ess, and invite him to a public dinner. The follow ing letter contains the particulars. To S. A. Donaldson, Esq, Agent to Lloyd's, Sydney. Adelaide, 4th July. 1845. Sir, — I have much pleasure in informing you, that by an Act in Council, which came into force this day, Port Adelaide has become & free port ; all charges for harbour dues, pilolage, mooring, entering, and cleariug, and lights being abolished, and although ships will be provided with pilots, as heretofore, they will be exempt from all charges whatsoever. The Government wharfage is also abolished. The following duties have been imposed to cover the outlay, instead of 10 per cent, ad valorem, as previously. I shall feel obliged by your making this information known us publicly as possible. H. W. PHILLIPS, Agent to Lloyd's.
Govei nor Grey stated in Council that he was in communication uith Sir G. Gipps respecting the establishment of an overland communication between Sydney and Adelaide. Several additional veins of copper liad been discovered, but at distances and under circumstances which will prevent them from being ivuiked in the piesent ciicums:<iuoes of the colony, The veins that were being worked continued to be exceedingly productive, and one proprietor alone (Capt. Bagot), it is said, will have above a thousand tonsofoie before the end of the year. It is feared that the scarcity of vessels will render freights so high as materially to affect prolits, us not more than live or six ships are ex- J pected at Adelaide, and there will be cargoes for twelve or fourteen. Everything appcarsflourisliing; but where are Ihe ships to take away the ore, wool, and other produce now ready for expoit?
