To the Editor of The Neto-Zealander. Si R> — You will oblige me by giving publicity in your columns to the accompanying r urrespondenoe. The allusions in the Colonial Secretary s letter to my havin°- interrupted the public business is untrue, as well as the making his office " a thoroughfare," and as for marked courtesy. I neither sought for, or expected it from Dr. Sinclair, but I do naturally expect from all public officers, in my intercourse with them, such ccmitesv as is due to a gentleman. The « disrespectful letters in the newspapers," allude, (I suppose) to a correspondence published, by me, some months past, in which the Col.mial Secretary, (by the directions of the Governor), mcd a very offensive aud uncalled for phrase. I am, Sir, Your's, &c. ; Hastings Atkins. Auckland, July 13, 1845.
[Copy of Correspondence.] Sir, — I do myself the honor to address your Excellency directly, instead of through the Colonial Secretary, in consequence of a request, on the subject matter of this letter, having been met by that officer this day, in a manner (to use the mildest phrase) not courteously. On the receipt of a communication from the Colonial Secretary of the Bth instant, in which I am informed, "That no deeds in the cases ot John Baker, and J. W. Wrights claims can he issued till it has been satisfactorily shewn that every means* by direct application, have been bad recourse to beforehand to obtain them," having repeatedly made direct application without effect, I consulted with my lawyer, who told me that conveyances to the parties who bought of Bakorhad been presented to him, and that he refused to execute them, and un il the crown grants were delivered, no action for breach of contract would lie. I therefore applied this morning for two of the Crown grants for the purpose of having a conveyance prepared by them, to try the question, at the same time offering the final fee on the whole claims, but being relused, returned to consult my lawyer again, who advised me to ask leave to take the desciiplion of the allotments from i he Crown grants, that it might be inserted in the body of the couveyance, and sent his clerk with me tor the purpose. On proffering my request in the most civil terms to Mr. Elliott, he applied to the Colonial Secretary, who refused, coupled with a very uneorteous remark. Under these circumstances, n'» other course is open to me than a direct itatemeut and application to your Excellency, from whom I respectfully anticipate an early and favourable consideration of my request, which becomes more urgent, owing to the circumstance of my leaving for Hokianga by the Nimrod on Monday next, and requiring time for the preparation of the conveyance. I have the honor to be, Your Excellency's most obedient servant, Hastings Aikins. To His Excellency the Governor, &c. &c. &c. Auckland, July 12,1845.
I Colonial Secretary's Office, July 14, 1845. Sir,— -In acknowledging the receipt of jour lelter under date the 12th instant, I am directed by the Governor to inform you that His Excellency cannot in any way countenance the interrupt.on ot public business, by private individuals occupying the officers' lime, as yon have done lately ; that the Colonial Secretary's office is not a thoroughfare, and that if you wish for any marked courtesy, to he shewn to you, his Excellency suggests that you should refrain from such a mode of conduct, as that which jou have adopted towards the public authorities, by an undue ! interference with their time, and by publishing disrespectiul letters in the newspapers. I am Sir, Your obedient servant, Andrew Sinclair. Colonial Secretary. To Hastings Atkins, Esq. Auckland.
