GARDEN PARTY AT TOTARA
,i" - ■ ' A SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION. . A Garden Party organised by the Totnra Girls' Auxiliaray was held in the giounds of Mr J. Macpherson, of Totara, on Saturday, i Many people took advantago of the+fine weather which prevailed, and the giounds presented a lively picture. There were tho usual rallies and competitions and .side-shows, fthich offered, according to "the man at the door," amazing value for the small I sum charged. Tho boys from the Wai-' ,talu High School lan most of the "shows," the exception being the "biplane," flhich could be viewed for the modest sum of sixpence. In the words of one disgusted youngster, whose sixpnee had gone in the good cause, it was "nothing but a lot of kciosene tins and a motor bike."; Races,were held for the children,• also' treasure hunts,' and the youngsters generally had a splendid time. The band'of the Wai-. taki.lligh School rendered excellent music throughout the afternoon. • The following arc the names of some of those who helped to make'the function a success:—Jumble Stall—Misses Needs, Hamilton, and M, Doak;.; Ice Cream and Sweets Stall—Misses. Ward, Dunbar, Kingan, and BuM; Shooting Galleiy—Mr Kogersjy Nail-driving— Miss Martin, Tea Eooms were run by the Totava ladies, helped by the members of the Girls' Auxiliary, while the High School boys were responsible for the magician's tent and for the "Kill-thc-Kniser" Stall.
The following are the results of the various cooking competitions:—Oven scones (ten entries)—M. Sims 1, Mrs Rawson and Miss Perry 2, Mrs H. Wilson 3; girdle scones (five entries)— Miss Sims 1, Miss Tindle 2, Miss McAhan 3; wlieatmeal scones (two entries)— Miss M, Doak 1; pikelets (eight entries)— Miss Raweliffc 1, Miss Perry 2, Miss Tlndle 3; seed, cake (six entries)— Mrs Rawson 1, Miss Sims 2; marble "cake (three entries)— Miss McAhan 1, Mrs Hawkcs 2; gingerbread (six entries)— Miss Perry 1, Miss Tindle 2, Mrs Rawson 3; shortbread (five entries)— Miss Tindle 1, Mrs Irving 2, Miss Kingan 3; sponge sandwich (nine entries)— Miss j v Morriss| 1, Mrs Maguley 2, Miss Tindle 3; fruit cake (four entries)— Miss McAla'n, Miss A, Doak 2; chocolate cake (three entries)— Miss Tindle 1, Miss Wood 2; date creams (three entries)— l Miss Stringer 1, Miss Hawkes 2; toffee—Miss Franklin 1, Miss Stringer ( 2; cocoainit ice (four entries)— Miss Mitchell 1, Miss Wood 2; collection of sweets (two entries) —ifiss Stringer, The committee wish specially to (hank the following:—Mr and Mrs Ma'cphcrson, for the use of their grounds; the ladies of the P.W.M.W., for their services at the refreshment stall; M,;;rs T.. Grave and G. Perry, for marquee- an.l flags; Misses Stewart and Ru'liardton, of the Waitaki Girls' High School, who judged the cooking competitions; the boys of the Waitaki High School, for running the side-shows and providing an orchestra; and all those of Totnra and the surrounding districts who gave donations of money and produce, i.
The total takings, which Amounted.tO' over £6O, are to bo divided between missions and the Red Cross. ' Those''who know say that this splendid result could not have been achieved if if had not been for the organising capacity of Miss Doak and the hearty co-opera-tion of the girls associated with her.
