Oaiplul attention to details means success in poultry culture. Cool, water', green food, and an nmplo supply of grit do much towards keeping the egg basket full.
•One hundred and sixty-one eggs in .one hundred and/eighty-onc days—this line feat has been accomplished by a White Leghorn pullet at the Kentucky ■Experimental Station (U.S.A.). This pullet was twelve months old on April 12, and up to that time had produced 13!) eji-gs, including 04 consecutively, Lady Walnut Hill—which is the pullet's name—is said (to be good looking, but not n show bird. Ucr tail feathers point upwards too much, and her. comb is a trifle heavy. At the same time she is deep in the body and extra wide through the pelvis bones. For such a small body this gives an unusually large space for the, development of eggs. The pullet weighs 3,71b, and possesses indomitable energy.
An excellent mixture which will be found both a preventative and'cure for colds, croup, etc., is mnde up as follows:
Glauuders Raits 4oz Epsom salts 2oz Sulphato of iron ki Crcosjpte 10 drops
Dissolve the n'oove in one quart of boiling water, and when cold use two tablespoonfnls to each gallon of drinking water as a dire for colds; or one tablcspoonful to a gallon of water as a tonic,
Something like consternation overtook importers of Australia wheat and "wheat products in Wellington on Wednesday (states tho Post), when it was learned that all importations of wheat, flour, bran, and pollard are prohibited, except with the consent of the Minister of Customs, given on the recommendation of tho Board of Trade. From Australia the principal imports are flour and wheat for fowl feed, The former is required by. the bakers for blending with 'New Zealand flour, and the latter for the poultry farmer. Now the trade will be thrown entirely upon local resources, and, must use in the bakehouse New Zealand flour, and farmers must scatter among tho hens nothing but New Zealand grain. The fowl wheat question is an important one for- all poultry men. It is estimated by those in the trade that 1000 sacks a week are required in Wellington district alone. .This week efforts to obtain 100 sacks only of; New Zealand fowl wheat have failed, and, speaking in the terms of the trade, "there is not a sack of New Zealand .fowl Wheat to be got"; in oilier words, it cannot be procured In 'anything like' sufficient quantities for the market requirements. The importations from Australia are required to meet legitimate demands for fowl food,-Maize is often suggested, and maize is considered to be a good feed, but with limitations—it is too "heating" in warm weather. But this is a .matter for the poultry farmer to decide. His decision is given already rn the general use of wheat as fowl j feed. As there is none in New. Zealand, and as Australian imports are:prohibit-, ed, the trade is now wondering what it is going to do, However, the Board nf Trade may have the views of both (lour and fowl wheat importers put before it. ■
