GOVERNOR OF BANK OF ENGLAND.

STOCKMAN TO WORLD FINANCIER

It is not generally known that Lord Cunliffe, the present Governor of the Bank of England, was once a stockman in Queensland. The Bankers' Magazin, (London) tells the story of the career of the man upon whom, tho heavy end of the burden of war finance lias fallen. According to this authority, Lord Cunlill'e, who was born in 1855, and educated at Harrow and Trinity College, Cambridge, after taking his degree travelled abroad, and began life in earnest, working for a year as a stockman in Queensland. He.has visited many parts of the world, either for business or sport; in fact, with the exception of South and Central Africa, there arc few places which he has not seen, mid many are his reminiscences of rough life in the ntiniilg camps and big game shooting expeditions. Eventually he settled down in partnership with his. brother Leonard, as merchant brokers, or an accepting house, under the name of Cunlill'e Bros., which perhaps, fortunately in the circumstances never aspired to doing large business, and was one of the few of those liouscs who were not caught with their wings rather too far spread when the great war broke out in August 19M. In 1895 he was made a director of the Bank of England, and held the position until 1911, when he was elected deputy-Governor, in succession to Mr A. C. Cole, wlio bocome Governor, On the outbreak of war Mr Cunliffe, doubtless to his own consternation found himself in the Governor's chair, which he has occupied since 19J3, Lord Cunlill'e is now in the midst of his fifth year of office, as, so far, it has been thought desirable to make no change during the war.
