WAITAKI COUNCIL ELECTIONS.
VACANCY IN THE KAKAUNI RIDING. MR PETER McFADGEN RETURNED The election ol' a membor to represent the Kakanui riding of tho County of Waitaki on the "Waitaki County Council, which ■ vacancy was caused through the death of Mr R. T. Oats, did not create' much interest amongst those not immediately concerned in tho election. There only two candidates nominated—Mr Theo Russell of -Oamaru, and Mr Peter McFadgen of Oamaru—so that the electors of Kaka-' nui had n dear issue as between the two nominees. Opinion was fairly evenly divided as to the result of the poll, and that opinion, was evidently a true reflection of the minds of the electors concerned in the ballot for when the figures came to be, counted it was found that the two candidates were separated by the narrow margin of only two votes Mr McFadgen's total being ISO and Mr Russell's 178. A recount of the votes, will take place early next week. Mr G. A. Travis, the re-
turning officer had his arrangements well laid and was able to announce the result of the election very shortly after the time for the elosing"of the polling booths. Following is the result of the voting at the several booths:—
McFadgen Russell. Kakanui 2 '43 Kia Ora 23 20 Oamaru 13 26 Reidston 44 5 South Oamaru 31 33 Totam ; C 7 G1
