COMMENT IN THE HOUSE,
WELLINGTON, July 19. The Governor-General was mentioned briefly in a debate in the House of Eepresentatives to-day. Mr R. McCallum (Wairau) stal ,1 that the Governor-General had) excised too much authority in comics'-. with the hospital ships, and he p.cto read a newspaper article ii;-?-■kg the Government to assert itself in, matter. James Allen raised a point of • order almost immediately, He said that it was not a proper thing for a member to discuss the action of the GovernorGeneral, especially when the Ministry was entirely responsible for the hospital ships and everything else. The Speaker upheld the Minister, and the House heard no more of the newspaper article. . Mr MeCallum them proceeded to refer to the increases in high official salaries, He said that the Government had broken faith with members of the House by taking a vote for war'bonuses to public servants toceiving under £3OO a year, and then paying some part of the money to highly-paid officers. "It is said," addVd the member, "that the Government intends now, because of a title lately given to this Dominion, to increase the highest salary paid in the Dominion, I emphatically protest against . anything of the kind. Mr Nosworthy (Ashburton): To whom are you alluding? Mr McCalliim: I am referring to high-salaried officials, and I don't care who they arc.
