RED CROSS RECITAL.
■ ENTERTAINMENT AT WEAR • 'STREET HALL, A somewhat novel and very enjoyable entertainment was given in the Wear Street Hall last night, when bythe courtesy of Messrs Milner and Thompson a pianola-piano, and rcolian voealion recital was given under the direction of Mr J. Walls, There was a good attendance, and the audience was most demonstrative in its applause of the various items given. The collection, which amounted to £4 lis, will be devoted; without any deduction, to the Red Cross funds.
11l ii brief explanation of the instruments, Mr Walls said that they had attracted considerable intcres; amongst music-lovers wherever they had been exhibited. The pianola-piano had now reached what could practically be said to be mechanical perfection in musical instruments, The ilMan Company were the biggest manufacturers of musical instruments in the world. It utilised the best brains it could command, fought out invention after invention until the process of evolution had produced the present perfected instrument. Amongst the many unique advantages of flic pianola were the inetrostyle and the theniodist. devices invented to assist the performer in the proper control of playing by means of a music roll. The inetrostyle was the only means of showing on a music roll exactly how a composition ought to be played. The patent was exclusive, and could not be included on instruments by makers of other player pianos. Mr Walls also read, some extracts regarding, the vocation, which was produced by the same company, and which /was remarkable in that it possessed a patent which was also exclusive, and which had the effect of giving perfect Control of the tone,
