llr L. W. D. Andrews, general manager of the United Insurance Company, who died at Auckland on Tuesday after a comparatively brief illness, was well known in insurance and business circles in the Dominion. For several years Mr Andrews was manager of the company at Wellington, and later at Auckland, and about eighteen months ago, when the head office was removed to Auckland, he was promoted to the general managership. Mr Andrews was the son of the late Mr Andrews, for many years Collector of Customs at Greymouth, anil married Miss P. M. Cross,- second daughter of the late Mr James S, Cross, of Nelson and Wellington,

, Judge Jones, of the Native Land Court, who has been transferal from Gisbcrne to the South Island, was tendered a public Jnrwell at the Gisbome Council Chambers prior to leaving, when many testimonies were made as to his sterling worth in his olficial capacity and as a citizen. Judge Jones, who has been resident in Gisborne, for many year?, was a prominent member of the local birr before accepting the judgeship some fourteen years ago, and was a member, of the Borough Council, for a number of years. He was one of the original members of the Gisbome Bowling Club, being at one time an enthusiastic bowler, aiulwaj for years a vicepresident of the Te Kau Club, which also tendered him a farewell, In the course of his duties on. the Bench Judge Jones,has,made a host of friends (says the "Hawke's Bay Herald"), and the Natives have already taken action in recognition of his valuable work on their behalf. }le still retains numerous, interests in the Poverty Bay district.
