Lieutenant W. 6. Stevens, of the Ncf.Zeaiand'Field Artillery, has been promoted to the- rank of captain, Lieutenant Stevens has been adjutant of one of the brigades of artillery ever since the New Zealand force. Went to France. He is a son of Captain W. Stevens, late of the Union Steam Ship Company's service. Air H. C. Stoddart. manager in New Zealand for the British Dominion's General Insurance Company, left Wellington on Friday on a visit to the company's head office, in London. He expects to return next June. During 1m absence the. management, of the company's New Zealand business will be in the hands of Mr H. H. McCullough, manager of the. Auckland branch, A cablegram was received last week, I says the Herald, from Adjutant- Winton, formerly well-known in Auckland as/officer in charge of the Salvation Army'si Young (People's Department, who left New Zealand as chaplain with a recent, reinforcement, stating that he had arrived safely in Egypt, Ho has been promoted to the- rank of staff- [ captain, and will take .up work with [ the forces in Egypt. Speaking at the University Senate at Auckland, the Chancellor (Sir Robert Stout), in his address, said:—"The Rhodes Scholar elected in 1915 was Lieutenant Athol. Hudson. He died fighting for his country in the fields of France. He received after his ap-. pointment intimation that he was the successful senior scholar in chemistry, and he would no doubt' have- won greater scientific distinction had his career not come to such an untimely end. The- Bhodes trustee gave the University power to nominate for last year two Bhodes Scholars. Those nominated were A. 0. Ponder and A. F, Meldrum. Mr Ponder had the-follow-ing academic distinctions, the B,A. degree and senior.scholarships in chemistry; Lieutenant Meldrum had passed with distinction the examinations for the first and second sections nf the LL.B, degree, He left New Zealand for the front, and was un ible to fit at a later examination, No doubt if he had not gone to the front he would have obtained his degree, and perhaps honours."
